A Comprehensive Guide to Using 'Was' and 'Were'
Hello Students! After learning 'Is, Am, Are', it is time to learn their Past Tense forms: Was and Were. These are used to describe a state, quality, or identity that existed in the Past (बीता हुआ समय).
Identification and Basic Rules (Was/Were के नियम)
हिंदी में इनका अर्थ "था", "थी", या "थे" होता है। इनका प्रयोग बीते हुए समय की बात करने के लिए किया जाता है।
* Was (था/थी): इसका प्रयोग Singular (एकवचन) Subjects और I के साथ किया जाता है।
* I, He, She, It, Any Name, Singular Noun.
* Were (थे/थीं): इसका प्रयोग Plural (बहुवचन) Subjects के साथ किया जाता है।
* We, You, They, Plural Noun.
Simple (Affirmative) Sentences
Rule: Subject + Was/Were + Object.
* I was a student last year. — मैं पिछले साल एक छात्र था।
* She was very beautiful. — वह बहुत सुंदर थी।
* They were in the park. — वे पार्क में थे।
* He was my neighbor. — वह मेरा पड़ोसी था।
* We were very happy. — हम बहुत खुश थे।
* It was a cold night. — वह एक ठंडी रात थी।
* Ram was an honest king. — राम एक ईमानदार राजा थे।
* You were a brave soldier. — तुम एक बहादुर सिपाही थे।
* The flowers were fresh. — फूल ताज़े थे।
* My father was a teacher. — मेरे पिता एक शिक्षक थे।
* The children were busy. — बच्चे व्यस्त थे।
* Agra was a big city then. — तब आगरा एक बड़ा शहर था।
* I was very thirsty. — मैं बहुत प्यासा था।
* The mango was ripe. — आम पका हुआ था।
* They were at the station. — वे स्टेशन पर थे।
* We were ready for the match. — हम मैच के लिए तैयार थे।
* He was an angry man. — वह एक गुस्सैल आदमी था।
* The sky was cloudy. — आसमान में बादल थे।
* You were very kind to me. — तुम मेरे प्रति बहुत दयालु थे।
* Cows were in the field. — गाएँ खेत में थीं।
Negative Sentences
Rule: Subject + Was/Were + Not + Object.
* I was not a thief. — मैं चोर नहीं था।
* She was not a singer. — वह गायिका नहीं थी।
* They were not tired. — वे थके हुए नहीं थे।
* He was not at home. — वह घर पर नहीं था।
* We were not late yesterday. — हम कल लेट नहीं थे।
* It was not a sunny day. — वह धूप वाला दिन नहीं था।
* Ram was not a liar. — राम झूठा नहीं था।
* You were not serious. — तुम गंभीर नहीं थे।
* The doors were not locked. — दरवाज़े बंद नहीं थे।
* My brother was not a pilot. — मेरा भाई पायलट नहीं था।
* The water was not clean. — पानी साफ नहीं था।
* They were not my enemies. — वे मेरे दुश्मन नहीं थे।
* I was not angry with her. — मैं उससे नाराज़ नहीं था।
* This question was not hard. — यह सवाल कठिन नहीं था।
* We were not rich then. — तब हम अमीर नहीं थे।
* She was not your classmate. — वह तुम्हारी सहपाठी नहीं थी।
* The apples were not sweet. — सेब मीठे नहीं थे।
* He was not a tall boy. — वह लंबा लड़का नहीं था।
