A Comprehensive Guide to Using 'Is', 'Am', and 'Are'
Hello Students! Today we will learn the most important part of English grammar: the use of Helping Verbs (Is, Am, Are). These are used to tell the state, quality, or identity of a person or object in the Present Tense.
Identification and Basic Rules (Is/Am/Are के नियम)
हिंदी में इनका अर्थ "है", "हूँ", या "हो/हैं" होता है। इनका चुनाव हमेशा Subject (कर्ता) के अनुसार किया जाता है।
* Am (हूँ): इसका प्रयोग केवल I के साथ किया जाता है।
* Is (है): इसका प्रयोग Singular (एकवचन) Subjects के साथ किया जाता है।
* He, She, It, Name, Singular Noun.
* Are (हो/हैं): इसका प्रयोग Plural (बहुवचन) Subjects के साथ किया जाता है।
* We, You, They, Plural Noun.
Simple (Affirmative) Sentences
Rule: Subject + Is/Am/Are + Object.
* I am a student. — मैं एक छात्र हूँ।
* She is very intelligent. — वह बहुत बुद्धिमान है।
* They are hard-working. — वे मेहनती हैं।
* He is my best friend. — वह मेरा सबसे अच्छा दोस्त है।
* We are Indian. — हम भारतीय हैं।
* It is a rainy day. — आज बारिश का दिन है।
* Ram is a good doctor. — राम एक अच्छे डॉक्टर हैं।
* You are a brave boy. — तुम एक बहादुर लड़के हो।
* The flowers are beautiful. — फूल सुंदर हैं।
* My mother is a teacher. — मेरी माँ एक शिक्षिका हैं।
* The children are happy. — बच्चे खुश हैं।
* Delhi is a big city. — दिल्ली एक बड़ा शहर है।
* I am hungry. — मैं भूखा हूँ।
* The mango is sweet. — आम मीठा है।
* They are at home. — वे घर पर हैं।
* We are ready for school. — हम स्कूल के लिए तैयार हैं।
* He is an honest man. — वह एक ईमानदार आदमी है।
* The sky is blue. — आसमान नीला है।
* You are very kind. — तुम बहुत दयालु हो।
* Cows are useful animals. — गाय उपयोगी जानवर होती हैं।
Negative Sentences
Rule: Subject + Is/Am/Are + Not + Object.
* I am not a thief. — मैं चोर नहीं हूँ।
* She is not a singer. — वह गायिका नहीं है।
* They are not tired. — वे थके हुए नहीं हैं।
* He is not a liar. — वह झूठा नहीं है।
* We are not late. — हमें देर नहीं हुई है।
* It is not cold today. — आज ठंड नहीं है।
* Ram is not at school. — राम स्कूल में नहीं है।
* You are not a bad person. — तुम बुरे व्यक्ति नहीं हो।
* The doors are not open. — दरवाज़े खुले नहीं हैं।
* My brother is not a soldier. — मेरा भाई सैनिक नहीं है।
* The water is not clean. — पानी साफ नहीं है।
* They are not my relatives. — वे मेरे रिश्तेदार नहीं हैं।
* I am not angry with you. — मैं तुमसे नाराज़ नहीं हूँ।
* This question is not easy. — यह सवाल आसान नहीं है।
* We are not rich. — हम अमीर नहीं हैं।
* She is not your sister. — वह तुम्हारी बहन नहीं है।
* The apples are not ripe. — सेब पके हुए नहीं हैं।
* He is not a tall man. — वह लंबा आदमी नहीं है।
* You are not alone. — तुम अकेले नहीं हो।
* It is not my mistake. — यह मेरी गलती नहीं है।
Interrogative Type 1 Sentences (Starting with Is/Am/Are)
Rule: Is/Am/Are + Subject + Object + ?
* Am I your friend? — क्या मैं तुम्हारा दोस्त हूँ?
* Is she a dancer? — क्या वह एक नर्तकी है?
* Are they players? — क्या वे खिलाड़ी हैं?
* Is he a lawyer? — क्या वह एक वकील है?
* Are we together? — क्या हम साथ हैं?
* Is it your book? — क्या यह तुम्हारी किताब है?
* Is Ram a farmer? — क्या राम एक किसान है?
* Are you a teacher? — क्या आप एक शिक्षक हैं?
* Are the birds in the sky? — क्या पक्षी आसमान में हैं?
* Is your father at office? — क्या तुम्हारे पिता ऑफिस में हैं?
* Is the tea hot? — क्या चाय गर्म है?
* Are these girls sisters? — क्या ये लड़कियाँ बहनें हैं?
* Am I right? — क्या मैं सही हूँ?
* Is the movie interesting? — क्या फिल्म दिलचस्प है?
* Are those students disciplined? — क्या वे छात्र अनुशासित हैं?

Rule: Wh-word + Is/Am/Are + Subject + Object + ?
* Who are you? — तुम कौन हो?
* How is your health? — तुम्हारा स्वास्थ्य कैसा है?
* Where is my bag? — मेरा बैग कहाँ है?
* Why are they sad? — वे दुखी क्यों हैं?
* What is your name? — तुम्हारा नाम क्या है?
* When is the exam? — परीक्षा कब है?
* How am I responsible? — मैं कैसे ज़िम्मेदार हूँ?
* Why is she crying? — वह क्यों रो रही है?
* Where are we now? — अब हम कहाँ हैं?
* Who is that man? — वह आदमी कौन है?
* Why are you late? — तुम्हें देर क्यों हुई है?
* How is the weather? — मौसम कैसा है?
* What is in your pocket? — तुम्हारी जेब में क्या है?
* Where are your parents? — तुम्हारे माता-पिता कहाँ हैं?
* Why is the baby silent? — बच्चा चुप क्यों है?
* Who are those boys? — वे लड़के कौन हैं?
* What color is your shirt? — तुम्हारी शर्ट का रंग क्या है?
* Why am I here? — मैं यहाँ क्यों हूँ?
* How much is the milk? — दूध कितना (किस दाम का) है?
* Where is the Taj Mahal? — ताजमहल कहाँ है?
Interrogative Type 2 Negative Sentences
Rule: Wh-word + Is/Am/Are + Subject + Not + Object + ?
* Why are you not ready? — तुम तैयार क्यों नहीं हो?
* Why is she not at home? — वह घर पर क्यों नहीं है?
* Why am I not a part of this? — मैं इसका हिस्सा क्यों नहीं हूँ?
* Why are they not happy? — वे खुश क्यों नहीं हैं?
* Why is the food not tasty? — खाना स्वादिष्ट क्यों नहीं है?
